MSc in Mathematical Finance (part-time) - Information for Applicants - FAQs

I have not studied mathematics for a while, how should I approach the Admissions Exercise?

Start working through maths problems - a good starting point is the Schaum's outline series of solved mathematics problems. There is one text for each branch, each with a very large number of fully solved maths questions.  The following are particularly relevant: Calculus, Probability, Linear Algebra. We also recommend books from the Pre-Course Reading List.

I can't upload the Admissions Exercise online - I am experiencing technical problems.

What is the 6-digit course code to enter on the application form?

I am not a native English speaker but I have excellent English.  Do I need to provide proof in the form of a test score?

You may apply to be exempted from the requirement for proof of proficiency in English in the following circumstances:

  • where you have substantial professional experience in an English speaking environment
  • where you have completed/are currently completing a full-time degree level course in English.

If you think you might qualify for exemption, please include in your application a letter addressed 'To whom it may concern', explaining why you think the English language requirements should be waived in your case.

I have not studied recently, and I will have difficulty providing three academic references.

You will be asked to name three academic referees as part of your application.  However, for this MSc at least one referee should usually be your current or most recent employer.  You will need to name three referees in order to submit your application online, but your application may be considered with only two references completed, provided that one is from a current or recent employer, and one is an academic reference.

Is there an application fee?

There is a £50 application fee, which covers the administrative costs incurred by the Graduate Admissions Office in processing your application.  Please see the Graduate Admissions Application Guide page for details. If you are being sponsored by an organisation - for example your employer - which is unable to pay the application fee online, please contact the Admissions Administrator for assistance.

Is funding available?

No scholarships or bursaries are available specifically for this course; however, the university provides general fees and funding information for potential graduate students.  Students on this MSc are usually self-funded or supported by their employer.

What visa will I require?

Students who may require a visa to visit the UK will need to apply for a Student Visitor Visa.  We will be able to provide a letter to successful candidates in support of such an application.  Please contact us at the earliest opportunity if this applies to you.  Please note that admission to this MSc does not support an application for a Tier 4 visa.
