Mathematical Finance Programme - Venues, Travel, and Accomodation Information

Venue for lectures

Most of the courses/modules are held at Dartington House, home to the Mathematical and Computational Finance Group and the Course Administration. Dartington House is located at 55 Little Clarendon Street in the centre of Oxford (map). The entrance to Dartington House is not obvious; it is between D'Oeverbroeck's College and the University Admissions Information Office, beneath a concrete arch and through a set of blue metal gates.

Some modules may also be held at other nearby Oxford venues.

Accommodation

Accomodation is not provided, and students will have to arrange their accomodation for when they visit Oxford.

Your college may be able to provide accomodation, particularly outside of the main University term time.

Rewley House, also the location of the Department for Continuing Education, has a Residential Centre and is situated in a quiet square only a three-minute walk from Dartington House and ten minutes from the city centre and central bus and train stations (map). The Residential Centre has 33 single study bedrooms with televisions, en-suite bathrooms and high-speed internet access. There is access for disabled visitors, 24-hour individual access, a receptionist on duty from 8.00am until 11.30pm and a resident night porter for emergencies. This is a popular and relatively inexpensive option and early application is essential.

Rooms in the Residential Centre are allocated on a first-come basis, and can only be booked out to delegates registered on a Continuing Education course.

If you would like to check availability please email the res-ctr [-at-] conted [dot] ox [dot] ac [dot] uk (Residential Centre), stating the course on which you have registered, or call them on +44 (0)1865 270362.

Another university option is Oxford University Club (map), which offers online booking.

Students have also stayed at the Cotswold Lodge Hotel (map).  Other hotels and B&Bs can be found on the Visit Oxford website.

Food, drink and entertainment

The What's on in Oxford website has details of the cultural (theatre, cinema, art, music) and not so cultural (shopping) aspects of Oxford life, as well as information about restaurants, bars and pubs.  A more comprehensive pub guide can be found here.

Travel

Getting to Oxford from Heathrow and Gatwick Airports

The easiest way to get to Oxford from Heathrow or Gatwick is using the Airline bus.  Direct services operate from Heathrow up to every 30 minutes and from Gatwick up to every hour. The final stop for these coaches, Gloucester Green (map), is the closest to Dartington House and Rewley House.

Getting to Oxford from London

Coach

The Oxford Tube and the Oxford Espress are frequent coach services that run from Victoria via Marble Arch and Hillingdon.  The 2 companies use slightly different routes through West London: the Oxford Tube stops at Notting Hill and Shepherd's Bush whereas the Oxford Espress stops at Baker Street.  NB some 'express' services may not stop at all these points.  You can buy 'carnets' of 12 single journeys on these coaches which can work out much cheaper than repeatedly buying day returns.

The final stop for these coaches (Gloucester Green - map) is the closest to Dartington House and Rewley House.

Train

A faster option is the train from Paddington.  The train is much more expensive than the coach early on weekday mornings, but can be much cheaper at other times if you book advanced purchase tickets. Timetable information and online booking of tickets, including advanced purchase tickets, is available at the First Great Western website.

Oxford Railway Station is marked on the map.

By train to Oxford from elsewhere in the UK

National Rail Enquiries provides timetable information and fares for train services across the UK.

Car

Please note that no car parking facilities are available at Dartington House or Rewley House. Parking in Oxford city centre, especially overnight, is a serious problem.  You can park at Watereaton and Thornhill Park and Rides for up to 72 hours (other Park and Rides are restricted to 24 hours).

If you are driving to Oxford for each day of the course it is advisable to use the Park & Ride Service. There are 5 large "park & ride" areas on the city approaches with free parking and frequent bus services into the city centre.

Further information on car parking in Oxford can be found on the Oxford City Council website
