The Oxford Centre for Nonlinear PDE are offering bursaries to undergraduates in the middle years of their degree to work on a research project for a period of up to 10 weeks during the summer vacation. This provides an excellent opportunity for you to gain first hand research experience and find out whether you might be suited to a career in academia. You will receive a bursary of £240 per week. There is also the opportunity to apply for up to £1,500 towards travel costs.

Application Process

The application process is now closed. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by no later than 25th April 2013. Successful applicants will be contacted by their supervisor to refine the project. Projects will usually be undertaken over the summer months (July, August and September).

Scheme details

You will receive a bursary of £240 per week for the duration of your summer project (a minimum of 4 weeks and a maximum of 10 weeks) and you will be able to apply for up to an additional £1,500 towards travel costs where you can show that such costs will be required to get to Oxford for the start of the project and to return home at the end of it.

For the duration of your summer research project you will be given support by your supervisor, computer access and access to desk space and other departmental resources. However you will be asked to arrange your own reading rights at the Bodleian and other University libraries as those not already registered at the University of Oxford will not be eligible to apply for a University Card. Prior to arrival you will receive support and advice in finding suitable accommodation and local information.

These summer projects are not eligible for credit award and will not be formally assessed as part of your degree course.

Students registered at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford who would like to write up a project during a formally assessed component of their degree course in subsequent year(s), will need to have the project being submitted for formal assessment approved by the Institute’s Projects Committee in the usual way. The project being submitted for formal assessment will usually need to be an extension of any summer work.

Students who are not registered at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford will need to check with their institution about the regulations surrounding the use of work undertaken as part of these summer projects in formally assessed components of their degree course in subsequent year(s).
