Connecting to the Institute's VPN

VPN Setup for Windows Vista

Creating the connection:

  1. Click the Windows button and then select "Connect To":



     
  2. Click "Set up a connection or network".


     
  3. Select "Connect to a workplace" and click "Next":



     
  4. Click "User my Internet connection (VPN)":



     
  5. In the window that appears, use the Internet Address vpn.maths.ox.ac.uk, and the Destination name as Maths Institute VPN.  Leave all the other checkboxes unchecked and then click "Next":



     
  6. The next window will ask you for your username and and password.  Use your Institute username and password, i.e. the username and password you log into the department with.  When you have done this, click  "Connect".



     
  7. You will be shown the progress of the connection...



     
  8. And then notified when you are connected.  Click "Close":



     
  9. You will be prompted by Vista for some information regarding the type of VPN connection that you have just connected.  Click "Work".
     

     
  10. As you will be doing some administrative tasks when modifying the connection type, you will be prompted to verify that this is really what you want to do.  Choose "Continue".



     
  11. At last, you have now set up your VPN connection.  Click "Close".


     

To disconnect the VPN, perform the following tasks:

  1. First, open the network connection window by clicking the Windows button and selecting "Connect To".  The following window will appear.  Note you are connected to the "Maths Institute VPN".  Simply highlight it and click "Disconnect".



     
  2. You will see a dialog while the connection is disconnected:



     
  3. And finally, you will be notified that you are disconnected.
