Backup Schedules

How often are the home directories and web pages backed up, and why?

The home directories are backed up early every morning; the precise time depends on where your home directory is located. To find out where your home directory is, change to it by typing cd and then find out the full name of the current working directory by typing pwd - you will see something like

torbernite% pwd
/a/aduki-bean/local/home/pg_1996/bloggs

In this example, user bloggs' home directory lives on aduki-bean, and is automounted from there when they log in.

The directories are backed up to guard against disk failure; also, the backups often have the useful side-effect of allowing users to retrieve files they have deleted by accident.
