Playing CDs and Sound

Please first consider those within and around your office before playing sound/music. There is also a headphone socket on the speaker that can be used to reduce the impact on others.

Playing Audio CDs

Command line tool

You can play audio CDs with the dcd command. Basic use as follows

dcd Start CD playing
dcd stop Stop CD playing
dcd dir List track numbers and playing times
dcd eject Eject CD
dcd pause Pause/Resume CD playing
dcd loop Loop play continuously all tracks on the CD
dcd loop 1 3 4 Loop play tracks 1, 3 and 4
dcd random Random order play of all tracks on CD
dcd random 1 3 4 Random order play tracks 1, 3 and 4
dcd forward Skip forward a track
dcd back Skip back a track

Graphical Tools

There are several graphical tools, e.g. gnome-cd, rhythmbox, xmms etc. Also see the Applications -> Debian Menu -> Apps -> SoundPlaying MIDI files Use timidity, e.g.
timidity file.mid

Playing several other sound formats

play can be used to play a variety of sound file formats including WAV files and Sun Audio au files. For more details see the man page.
