Under Linux there is gftp. gFTP can be configured to use FTP or SSH (SFTP) to transfer files between systems simply by selecting the files and pressing the appropriate `arrow' icon to move the file in a given direction between the listings of files on the local and remote machine.

Under Mac OSX we can recommend the software Cyberduck for copying files over the network

Under Windows there are similar applications to gftp such and WinSCP

For all of these tools one would generally use gate.maths.ox.ac.uk as the server and SFTP as the protocol in order to copy files from and to the departmental home directory.
