Ashley Pitcher

Ashley completed her DPhil at OCIAM in 2009 under the supervision of Prof. John Ockendon.

    What do you do now?

I work in consulting in the health care industry, specifically in health economics and predictive analytics.  It's really fast paced and I'm constantly learning new things.

When you were a student, did you imagine you'd find yourself doing what you do now?
No, I always imagined I’d stay in academia.  Transitioning from academia to industry has been my biggest career challenge so far.

How much maths is there in your day job?
A surprising amount! We build mathematical models of the impact of health care interventions, and we also use machine learning to make predictions about things like patient response to a particular type of treatment or to help identify patients likely to have an undiagnosed rare disease.

What advice would you give your student self?
Take advantage of all the things Oxford has to offer because time there goes by really quickly!

What do you like/miss/remember most about Oxford Mathematics?
I miss tea and coffee at 11 and going to the Royal Oak after Thursday seminars.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
DIY on my new house, going to the theatre, cooking and going to nice restaurants.

Are there things you find frustrating about your work/life balance?
Definitely, but I’m learning to manage it better over time!
