The Careers Service, in conjunction with the Oxford Learning Institute, runs a number of events and workshops designed especially for research staff. The Women in Academic Careers Panel is designed for women considering pursuing an academic career. You can find out what life is like as an academic, understand different perspectives on balancing life with an academic career and get tips on how to succeed as a female in academia. The University has been awarded a HR Excellence in Research award. The award recognises the systems and practices which are in place at the University to support researchers’ career and professional development, and it acknowledges the University's commitment to looking after research staff and their development.
The Women in Mathematics Day is an annual event organised by the London Mathematical Society for women in mathematics to meet together, usually at De Morgan House in London for a day of talks and discussion groups. The talks are given by women mathematicians from a range of disciplines and who are at various stages in their careers. The event is aimed in particular at women postgraduates, final year undergraduates and those at an early stage in their career. The Mathematical Institute encourages attendance and can provide travel funding; contact the Chair of the Good Practice Steering Group for more details.
In 2013 there was a special two day event (April 18-19) hosted by the Newton Institute in Cambridge.
Mathematrix, Mathematical Community set up by Dr Lillian Pierce is a forum to discuss issues that are typically a concern to female mathematicians. However, the discussions will be relevant to all types and ages of mathematicians, and everyone, from undergraduate to graduate to postdoc to faculty, is welcome.
Mathematrix lunches take place every Friday 1-2 pm at The Higman Room, St Giles Building. Bring your own lunch, coffee and biscuits will be provided.

The April 30th Royal Society’s Diversity Day is a one-day conference where the Royal Society will showcase our activity to date in this area and provide more information on their research and events. The conference will start at 10am with registration and finish at 4.30pm with a networking drinks reception. The programme will include:
- Women in science Wikipedia edit-a-thon
- An Oral History of Science Lives in the UK: a project exploring ethnicity and science
- Findings from research on socio-economic status in the scientific workforce
- STEM-Disability Committee projects
- Launch of the new diversity pages on the Royal Society website

The first Heidelberg Laureate Forum will take place from September 22 until 27, 2013 and bring together the best students in mathematics and computer science with winners of the most prestigious awards in these two disciplines: Abel, Fields, and Turing Laureates. Women in Numbers Workshop. 14-18 October 2013 at CIRM in Luminy, France. Collaborative workshop focused on open research problems. The participants will be divided into small working groups. Each group will include a mix of 4-6 senior and junior women that will work on a project together. Room and board will be provided. 20 openings. The Mathematical Institute Careers Event: Jobs for Mathematicians took place on Tuesday 22 January at the Mathematical Institute. It is expected that this event will be held every year http://www.careers.ox.ac.uk/our-services/events-for-all/careers-fairs/.
The 2013 Mary Cartwright Lecture took place on Friday 1st March, 2013 at De Morgan House, 57-58 Russell Square, London, WC1B. The speaker was Margaret Wright, from the Courant Institute, New York University, and the lecture was titled: "A Mathematical Journey in Non-Derivative Optimization".
For future years, there are funds available from the LMS and from the Mathematical Institute to contribute in part to the expenses of members of the Society or research students to attend the meeting. Funding opportunities for female postdoctoral researchers
- Research Professional is a Comprehensive Research Professional funding opportunities database which offers researchers the opportunity to search for research funding in all disciplines from a wide range of sponsors in the UK and overseas. The University of Oxford subscribes to the Research Professional database and use is free of charge for all University members.
- L'Oréal UK & Ireland Fellowships For Women in Science. To outstanding female postdoctoral researchers, this one year fellowship provides practice help to continue the fellow's research.
- Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowships. For women from developing countries or emerging economies.
- IFUW International Fellowships and Grants. For female graduate students or postgraduate researchers pursuing their research at a different country than their undergraduate studies.
- The Daphne Jackson Trust helps scientists, engineers and technologists to return to work after a career break of two or more years for family, caring or health reasons.
- The London Mathematical Society's Grace Chisholm Young Fellowship provides help to mathematicians who have their careers interrupted after partner rellocation or family responsibilities.
