Research Interests:
Transcription termination and initiation in the model organism Schizosaccharomyces pombe (fission yeast). Of particular interest are possible motifs within the DNA, signalling the RNA polymerase to terminate (poly(A) sites and motif-elements associated with it). Previously it has been shown that a protein called Cohesin influences transcription termination in S. pombe. It is now a goal to develop a mathematical model of interactions between DNA, RNA polymerase and Cohesin. Prizes, Awards and Scholarships:
Microsoft Research Cambridge Award for a DTC summer project: Mathematical modelling and experimental verification of interactions between the RNA polymerase and cohesin complex in transcription . Oxford Scholar (Nuffield Scholarship, 2006)
Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft e.v. Honorary member (2005).
German Competition of Mathematics (several times first and second prizes in 2002, 2003, 2004).
German Mathematics Olympiad (several times second and third prizes in 2001, 2002, 2004) .
National Mathematics Award of the United States Achievement Academy (USAA) in 2003. Teaching:
Tutor (2012) at the Mathematical Institute, Oxford, UK (3rd year course: Nonlinear Systems). Teaching Assistant (2010/2011/2012) at the Mathematical Institute, Oxford, UK (3rd and 4th yeart courses: Banach Spaces, Banach- and C*-Algebras, Mathematical Biology and Mathematical Physiology). Tutor (2009) at St. Hilda's College 2009 (1st year pure and applied Mathematics). Private tutoring of secondary school students. |
