Research Interests:

My main research interests lie in the analysis of Partial Differential Equations which come from condensed matter physics, in particular the theory of nematic liquid crystals.

I have an interest in linking atomistic theories of matter to continuum theories, especially the link between classical mechanics of molecules and the Boltzmann equation. I am also interested in establishing the existence of phase transitions for particle systems in the continuum in the thermodynamic limit.

My supervisors are Professor Sir John Ball FRS and also Dr Arghir Zarnescu, who is now at the University of Sussex.

Major/Recent Publications:

Dynamic Statistical Scaling in the Landau-de Gennes Theory of Nematic Liquid Crystals, E. Kirr, M. Wilkinson and A. Zarnescu. Preprint available at arXiv:1211.4427.

Strict Physicality of Global Weak Solutions of a Navier-Stokes Q-tensor System with Singular Potential, M. Wilkinson. (submitted) Preprint available at arXiv:1211.6083.
