Mathematical Finance Programmes at the University of Oxford
The University of Oxford offers full-time, part-time and short programmes in Mathematical Finance. These programmes are run by the Mathematical and Computational Finance Group. |
Why Mathematical Finance @ Oxford?
The Mathematical and Computational Finance Group at Oxford is one of the largest and most dynamic research environments in mathematical finance in the world. We combine core mathematical expertise with an interdisciplinary approach. It is a particular strength of the group that all of its faculty members are internationally recognised experts in core mathematical fields (such as stochastic analysis; stochastic control; theory, applications and numerical approximation of partial differential equations; Monte-Carlo methods; mathematical modelling; and operations research) relevant to finance, and this broad knowledge base is used to investigate a wide spectrum of problems in Mathematical Finance. Through permanent links with the Nomura Centre for Mathematical Finance and the Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance, we foster lively interactions between researchers coming from different backgrounds and a truly impressive seminar programme. All of this informs the delivery of all our programmes within one of the world's top universities.
DPhil and MSc by Research in the Mathematical and Computational Finance Group
We admit outstanding students from worldwide for our DPhil (PhD) programme. We welcome students with their own particular ideas of research topic as well as students with broad interest in the field of Mathematical Finance.
Full-time MSc in Mathematical and Computational Finance
A one-year full-time taught course for students with a strong mathematical background. The MSc combines a strong grounding in the core areas of mathematical finance with the study of more advanced topics, providing students with the skills necessary for further quantitative research. This course is full-time, and students will be present in Oxford for the duration of the course (approximately 10 months from end September-July). The majority of students are recent graduates seeking to gain the expertise to develop a career in the financial sector.
Part-time MSc in Mathematical Finance
A part-time course on quantitative techniques in the financial markets, delivered in a series of modules taught by experts in the respective fields. The MSc is aimed at students with several years' professional work experience in a financial institution, or who are considering a career in this area. It is structured to be accessible to those in full-time employment, and to those not resident in the UK. The majority of students on the programme live overseas and travel to Oxford for modules.
Each module is four to five days long, covering the most important technical and quantitative aspects of finance in regular use in financial institutions, from fundamental concepts through to the latest developments.
The MSc starts in January each year, and is designed to take just over two years. Depending on their Advanced Module choices, which must total three, students take five to six modules in the first year, and take one or two modules and write their Dissertation in the second year.
Short Courses in Mathematical Finance
Each of the advanced modules of the MSc in Mathematical Finance is available as a 'stand-alone' four-day short course.
