Application procedure for the MSc in Mathematical Finance
There is one intake per year for this course, in January, at the start of the Hilary Term.
Please note that it is necessary to complete the Mathematics Admissions Exercise as part of your application.
If you are unable to apply online, you may submit a paper application. Please contact graduate [dot] admissions [-at-] admin [dot] ox [dot] ac [dot] uk if you need to use this method of application.
The six-digit course code is 000170.
Waivers of requirements for proof of proficiency in English
You may apply to be exempted from the requirement for proof of proficiency in English in the following cases,- worked for a long period in an English speaking environment
- you completed/are currently completing a full-time degree level course in English.
If you think you might qualify for exemption, please include in your application a letter addressed 'To whom it may concern', explaining why you think the English language requirements should be waived in your case. If you need further advice please contact Ms Tunde Balazs, mathfin [dot] admissions [-at-] maths [dot] ox [dot] ac [dot] uk.
The mandatory Admissions Exercise
As an absolute minimum, applicants are expected to master two thirds of the Admissions Exercise without difficulty.
- The exercise is a formal part of the application process.
- If you are rusty on your maths, start working through maths problems - a good starting point is the Schaum's outline series of solved mathematics problems. There is one text for each branch, each with a very large number of fully solved maths questions. The following are particularly relevant: Calculus, Probability, Linear Algebra. We also recommend books from the Pre-Course Reading List
- Please make sure you complete the declaration that the answers you are submitting are your own work, without which your application cannot be considered.
- If you have difficulty with scanning/uploading your answers to the exercise please contact graduate [dot] admissions [-at-] admin [dot] ox [dot] ac [dot] uk
References
Applicants for graduate study in the University are generally asked to provide three academic references. As this MSc is designed for mature students in employment it is appropriate, and indeed preferable, that at least one of these references is from a current or recent employer, and one an academic reference. If there is a delay in getting all three references to us your application may be considered with only two references, provided that one is from a current or recent employer, and one is an academic reference. Please note that your application will be considered only if all required documents, including the reference letters, are subbmited by the application deadline.
Submitting your application
There is a £50 application fee, which covers the administrative costs incurred by the Graduate Admissions Office in processing your application.
For online applications, this fee is payable, by credit card only, when the application is submitted. If you don't have a credit card, please see the Graduate Admissions Application Guide page. If you are being sponsored by an organisation - for example your employer - that is unable to pay the application fee online, please contact the Mathematical Finance Administrative Office for assistance.
