Funding opportunities

Generic funding (usually EPSRC Standard Grant)

Generic funding comprises those calls for proposals that have no specific research remit within mathematics. Funding of this type largely takes the form of responsive mode funding from the primary research councils, such as EPSRC, BBSRC, and NERC; other funding bodies whose calls are listed, such as the Leverhulme Trust and the Royal Society, are comparable in their orientation. Responsive mode applications may be submitted at any time of the year; the research councils can take up to six months to process applications.

Contact the Head of Research Facilitation to discuss potential applications.

Specific funding

Specific funding comprises calls for proposals that address more narrow subject areas of research. Examples of specific funding calls include calls from the National Cancer Institute (NIH, US) and the Wellcome Trust; in addition, the research councils will often issue particular calls for proposals outside the responsive mode framework for areas of emerging or otherwise specific interest.

Current calls

If you are considering preparing a grant application please contact the Head of Research Facilitation to discuss timescales. Applications must be received at least three weeks prior to the external deadline (then submitted for central university approval at least one week prior to the external deadline). A list of current calls is maintained here.

If you intend to apply, or are interested in applying, for an externally funded personal fellowship to be held at the Mathematical Institute, please note that the MI must receive applications a number of weeks prior to the funding body's submission deadline. This lead time is necessary for departmental and institutional reviews of applications to be completed. Contact the Research Facilitator as soon as possible to discuss your potential application.

Examples of personal fellowships include an EPSRC fellowship with three career stages, postdoctoral, early career and established career; Royal Society university research fellowships; and Wellcome Trust university awards.

Prizes

Faculty who should like to make nominations for prizes should consult, in the first instance, with the head of their research group. Examples of prizes include the Philip Leverhulme Prize and the Microsoft European Science Award. A list of selected prizes is maintained here.

Travel funding

Members of the MI who wish to travel abroad for research purposes or conferences, or to host a visitor from abroad, can select from a range of funding sources. Contact the Research Facilitator outlining your requirements.

Email updates

Details of selected calls for proposals are distributed regularly to the permanent-faculty and research-staff mailing lists in the Mathematical Institute. Subscribe to the appropriate mailing list if you would like to receive these updates by email.
