Characterizations of Besov spaces via ball averages and Bianchini-type norms

Óscar Domínguez Bonilla
(Universidad Complutense de Madrid)
Abstract

Motivated by recent problems on mixing flows, it is useful to characterize Besov spaces via oscillation of functions (averages) and minimization problems for bounded variation functions (Bianchini-type norms). In this talk, we discuss various descriptions of Besov spaces in terms of different kinds of averages, as well as Bianchini-type norms. Our method relies on the K-functional of the theory of real interpolation. This is a joint work with S. Tikhonov (Barcelona).

K-contact & Sasakian manifolds of dimension 5

Vicente Muñoz
(Universidad Complutense de Madrid)
Abstract

Sasakian manifolds are odd-dimensional counterparts of Kahler manifolds in even dimensions,
with K-contact manifolds corresponding to symplectic manifolds. It is an interesting problem to find
obstructions for a closed manifold to admit such types of structures and in particular, to construct
K-contact manifolds which do not admit Sasakian structures. In the simply-connected case, the
hardest dimension is 5, where Kollar has found subtle obstructions to the existence of Sasakian
structures, associated to the theory of algebraic surfaces.
In this talk, we develop methods to distinguish K-contact manifolds from Sasakian ones in
dimension 5. In particular, we find the first example of a closed 5-manifold with first Betti number 0 which is K-contact but which carries no semi-regular Sasakian structure.

A mathematical approach to the mathematical modelling of Lithium-ion batteries

Angel Ramos
(Universidad Complutense de Madrid)
Abstract

In this talk we will discuss the mathematical modelling of the performance of Lithium-ion batteries. A mathematical model based on a macro-homogeneous approach developed by John Neuman will be presented. The uniqueness and existence of solution of the corresponding problem will be also discussed.
