Workload
Workload Database pilot
In March 2020, a proposal was brought to Departmental Faculty Meeting, outlining changes to be made to the workload database and the benefits which this would bring to both faculty members and departmental decision making. Since then, with a minor hiatus to complete REF/Athena SWAN, processes have been updated to ensure that the data held is as current and accurate as possible, changes have been made to the database structure to enable visibility and transparency of data, and the data collected has been refined. Individual workload records are now available via a new button on each member of faculty's web homepage (users will need to be logged in to the website to view this).
The format of reports have not changed significantly, however some additional data is now included, plus the report includes time factors for Teaching, Examining and Supervision, together with time factors for administrative functions, including Department Offices, Committee Memberships, Admissions and Recruitment. The combined time factors are also depicted in graph form to show your workload in each of teaching and administrative duties, alongside an average of your peer-group (APTFs, for example). This blank workload template illustrates the associated activities and time factors: Blank workload report for key[13917].pdf
Please note that, in accordance with principals agreed at Departmental Committee, the time factors have been determined using a broad-brush approach following detailed consultation with staff, and you can review the considerations/calculations behind these data in the attached document. The database is being piloted in this format throughout the current academic year, 2021/22. We appreciate that we may not have got all the factors right from the start, and we plan to refine and review as part of the pilot. Further elements may need to be considered during the pilot including, for example, Research Group office holders' responsibilities (noting that DPhil Admissions lead and OMMS Admissions which have been factored in already).
Feedback and contact
We are very keen to receive feedback during this pilot stage. Please get in touch if you have any feedback about any aspect of the workload database/your individual report to @email.
A Focus Group meeting took place in Hilary Term 2022, and a full review of the database pilot will report to Nominations Committee in Trinity Term 2022. If you would like to offer any additional feedback, please get in touch via the email address above.
