Configuring wireless for the MATHS network using the wicd network manager

Connect using the wicd network manager

If you are using the wicd network manager (available for most distributions of Linux), please follow the instructions below to connect to the Maths network.

First, create a new wicd template called maths_profile in the directory /etc/wicd/encryption/templates

$ sudo nano /etc/wicd/encryption/templates/maths_profile

You can substitute nano for your favourite text editor.

Enter (or cut and paste) the following information:

name = MATHS Wireless Profile
author = gexon
version = 1
require username *Username password *Password
protected password *Password
-----
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
network={
    ssid="$_ESSID"
    scan_ssid=$_SCAN
    key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
    eap=TTLS
    identity="$_USERNAME"
    password="$_PASSWORD"
    ca_cert="/etc/ssl/certs/AffirmTrust_Commercial.pem"
    phase2="auth=MSCHAPV2"
}

Next, you will need to tell wicd to use this profile.

$ sudo nano /etc/wicd/encryption/templates/active

You will see existing profiles already present.  Add the profile you've just created.  In this case I've added it to the first on the list, i.e.

maths_profile
wpa
wpa-peap
wpa-psk
wpa2-leap
wpa2-peap
wep-hex
wep-passphrase
wep-shared
leap
ttls
eap
peap
peap-tkip
eap-tls
psu

Next, restart the wicd network manager

$ sudo /etc/init.d/wicd restart

You've now added the new wireless profile to the list of wireless connection profiles.  To use it, choose the MATHS SSID and select "MATHS Wireless Profile" from the choice of encryption profiles, type in your username and password in the fields provided, click "OK" and "Connect".
