About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for an extremely well-organised and highly numerate individual to join the Mathematical Institute as departmental Finance Manager.
Reporting to, and working closely alongside, the Head of Administration and Finance, you will play a key role in overseeing the day-to-day finance operation for our world-leading mathematics department, and will take the lead in developing and implementing departmental financial plans.
You will manage an annual turnover of £30M, in addition to a portfolio of around 120 research grants of varying size, scope and complexity. You will act as trusted point of contact for timely and accurate financial information, which you will provide to the Head of Department, Head of Administration and Finance, and other departmental, divisional and University colleagues when required.
As departmental Finance Manager, you will have the opportunity to play a key role in developing the overall financial health of the Institute, and in ensuring the department has in place effective and resilient financial processes and controls. You will supervise the day-to-day activities of your six team members and oversee their professional development.
We are looking for candidates with a professional accountancy qualification, supplemented by relevant previous experience of managing a finance function, including the implementation of financial processes and controls. You will have a proven ability to communicate complex information, both orally and in writing, and to develop good working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders. You will demonstrate a high level of general IT competence including advanced Excel skills, and be able to work methodically and accurately when under pressure to meet competing deadlines.
We proudly hold a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award and an institutional Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our strategic aim to improve staff equality and diversity, we would particularly welcome applications from BIPOC candidates, who are currently under-represented in positions of this type within the department.
