Segre and Verlinde formulas for moduli of sheaves on surfaces

Lothar Gottsche
(ICTP Trieste)
Abstract

This is a report on joint work with Martijn Kool.

Recently, Marian-Oprea-Pandharipande established a generalization of Lehn’s conjecture for Segre numbers associated to Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces. Extending work of Johnson, they provided a conjectural correspondence between Segre and Verlinde numbers. For surfaces with holomorphic 2-form, we propose conjectural generalizations of their results to moduli spaces of stable sheaves of higher rank.

Using Mochizuki’s formula, we derive a universal function which expresses virtual Segre and Verlinde numbers of surfaces with holomorphic 2-form in terms of Seiberg- Witten invariants and intersection numbers on products of Hilbert schemes of points. We use this to  verify our conjectures in examples.

Holomorphic anomaly in Vafa-Witten theory -- ZOOM SEMINAR

Pavel Putrov
(ICTP Trieste)
Abstract

Vafa-Witten theory is a topologically twisted version of 4d N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. In my talk I will tell how to derive a holomorphic anomaly equation for its partition function on a Kaehler 4-manifold with b_2^+=1 and b_1=0 from the path integral of the effective theory on the Coulomb branch. I will also briefly mention an alternative and somewhat similar computation of the same holomorphic anomaly in the effective 2d theory obtained by compactification of the corresponding 6d (2,0) theory on the 4-manifold.

Arithmetic of attractive K3 surfaces and black holes

Shehryar Sikander
(ICTP Trieste)
Abstract

A K3 surface is called attractive if and only if its Picard number is 20: The maximal possible. Attractive K3 surfaces possess complex multiplication. This property endows attractive K3 surfaces with rich and well understood arithmetic. For example, the associated Galois representation turns out to be a product of well known two dimensional representations and the  Hasse-Weil L-function turns out to be a product of well known L-functions. On the other hand, attractive K3 surfaces show up as solutions of the attractor equations in type IIB string theory compactified on the product of a K3 surface with an elliptic curve. As such, these surfaces dictate the near horizon geometry of a charged black hole in this theory. We will try to see which arithmetic properties of the attractive K3 surfaces lend a stringy interpretation and use them to shed light on physical properties of the charged black hole.
