The determination of the parameters of a PDE from information on its solutions are examples of inverse problems in PDE. Such questions are typically ill-posed; one important issue is to determine what parameters are observables, and characterise 'invisible' parameters. Such questions have a deep connection with experimental measurements, in the physical and biomedical sciences. The practical applicability of the theoretical results obtained is of paramount importance.
