The University of Oxford intends to appoint to the Professorship of Numerical Analysis from 1 January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post is associated with a Professorial Fellowship at Balliol College.

The Professorship of Numerical Analysis is a premier appointment, one of a number of Statutory Professorships currently held at the Mathematical Institute. The Professor will be expected to provide research leadership for the Numerical Analysis group and more widely within the Mathematical Institute and in their subject at national and international level, and will also engage in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level within the Mathematical Institute, and play a major role in the supervision, guidance and examination of graduate students.

We are seeking a scholar of the highest international calibre in the area of numerical analysis, interpreted in its broadest sense. You should have a proven record of original research of the highest quality and of securing research funding, with an excellent publication record and a demonstrable ability to provide research leadership and direction. You should be able to provide effective and innovative teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, to direct postdoctoral researchers and to communicate effectively with a wide range of colleagues within the Department, College and wider University.

If you would like to discuss this post in more detail, please contact Professor James Sparks, Head of the Mathematical Institute, at @email, or Professor Endre Süli at @email. All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection decision.

We proudly hold a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award and an institutional Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our strategic aim to improve staff equality and diversity, we would particularly welcome applications from women, from disabled people and from people of Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, who are currently under-represented in positions of this type at Oxford.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. For further information, including the job description and selection criteria and how to apply, please see the Further Particulars.
