Changes on the unmanaged/laptop network

Currently people need to register their machines before these can access the network. In order to enhance security as well as accessibility we will be changing this to a 'Captive Portal' solution, which is a similar solution to the one used on the OUCS visitor network or other public hotspots in airports, buses etc.

When connecting to the network and starting a browser, you will be automatically redirected to an authentication page on which you have to enter your username and password. Once this happens you will have instant access to the network. The switchover will also have the nice side effect that we have been assigned proper IP addresses for this network, which means that there should be less problems with special outgoing connections (in particular VPN connections).

The new system will be launched in several stages. The first stage, which will happen on Thursday (15/07) morning, will not affect any existing machines/laptops. Only new laptops which haven't been registered yet, will need to authenticate. In particular this should be easier for new visitors who will get instant access to the network if they have a Maths account. If this goes well, then we will move other user groups onto the new system in stages.

If you have any questions/comments concerning this, please do let us know by emailing help [-at-] maths [dot] ox [dot] ac [dot] uk .

Departmental Internet access - Thu 17 Jun, 16:30-17:30

On Thursday 17 June, between 16:30 and 17:30, OUCS will be making some changes to our Internet gateway.

During this time, there will be no Internet access to or from the Mathematical Institute network. However, all internal network access to file shares, the maths website, etc. will work continue to work as normal.

We expect that the disruption will last for no longer than 10 minutes, but we can't promise that the work will be completed before 17:30.

If this time slot is unsuitable for you, or if you have any queries regarding this notice, please let us know by contacting us at:

[RESOLVED] Departmental network connection failed 16/5/2010

The OUCS equipment providing the departmental network connection to the university backbone network, as well as the connection between the St Giles building and our other 4 sites, failed at about 1:30pm on Sunday 16th May. OUCS have installed replacement parts restoring service at 9:45am on Monday 17th May.

There have been previous short (2-5 minute) interruptions to the network connection of the St Giles building over the last month or so which were reported to OUCS at the time. Hopefully this is all part of the same problem and thus the parts replaced will result in no further short losses of connectivity.

Title: The Changing Risks of Government Bonds

Abstract: The covariance between nominal bonds and stocks has varied considerably over recent decades and has even switched sign. It has been predominantly positive in periods such as the late 1970s and early 1980s when the economy has experienced supply shocks and the central bank has lacked credibility. It has been predominantly negative in periods such as the 2000s when investors have feared weak aggregate demand and deflation. This lecture discusses the implications of changing bond risk for the shape of the yield curve, the risk premia on bonds, and the relative pricing of nominal and inflation-indexed bonds.
