New Building Construction: Progress Update 22

General

Cranes & Hoist:- The service modules (pre-assembled pipes, ducts and wire trays on a metal frame) will be delivered on the 14th,15th & 16th August before carefully being lowered by crane through an access hole into the lower floors.

Cladding Mock Up:- Cladding surveys have begun with brackets and unit installation to follow shortly. The glass window and louvre have been installed onto the existing mock up which houses the reconstituted stone .

Visits:- The Maths Department visited the site on 20/72012 to view the latest progress. Following the Considerate Contractors Scheme (CCS) visit, a score of 39/40 has been awarded to the project.

Future works for August

Steel Beams & Columns:- Steel bridges have been delivered and have had the support balustrade fixed and the decking installed where required. Steel stairs are onsite ready for installation into the building.

Blockwork:- Perimeter walls in the basement and mezzanine continue to be built as back propping gradually is removed as slabs gain strength.

1st Floor:-  The remaining Entrance slab 24 was poured on 03.08.12. These slabs consist of a set of precast concrete planks (temporary supported) with an insitu concrete topping with strands (steels within tubes) which are stressed (tightened at the ends) after the concrete has set hard.

2nd Floor:- The remaining pour 29B on the south was concreted on 09.08.12. 

3rd Floor:- The third pour 34A on the south is expected to be concreted on w.c.13.08.12.  All of the 3rd floor slabs complete before the end August. 

4th Floor:- The 1st pour on the south is expected to be concreted on 10.08.12.  The last pour 38 on the north was concreted on 07.08.12.

5th Level Roof:- The majority of columns and walls are from 4th to 5th are installed with temporary table props in place.

Waterproofing & Flat Roof:- Rock are approximately ¾ of the way around the building with the waterproofing work to the ground floor, allowing the insulation and firm topping to commence on 20.08.12.

Ceiling insulation:- Plasterboard contractor CG Reynolds have continued with basement ceiling insulation in the north block.

Lifts:- The lift contractor Thyssen continues with the car lift in the north being the first installation.

Mechanical & Electrical:- Services contractor Crownhouse continue with internal drainage from the north to the centre on the basement level.

Ground Floor:- The remaining slab over the large lecture theatre was poured on 13/7/2012.

1st Floor:- The 23B slab to the south was poured on 23/7/2012. The Entrance slab 24 is expected to be poured at the end of next week These slabs consist of a set of precast concrete planks (temporary supported) with an insitu concrete topping with strands (steels within tubes) which are stressed (tightened at the ends) after the concrete has set hard.

2nd Floor:- The third pour on the south was poured on 27/7/2012 and the remainder is expected to be complete by early August.

3rd Floor:- The remaining pour on the north was concreted on 17/7/2012. The first & second pours on the south was poured on 12/7/2012 and 25/7/2012. All 3rd floor slabs will be complete by mid August.

4th Floor:- The 1st pour on the north was concreted on 26/7/2012 and the remainder is expected in early August.

General

Position:- The project generally is on average on programme however the critical activities running through the south atrium and entrance works are adrift by a couple of weeks.

Cranes & Hoist:- The structure is largely fed by the tower cranes and have been supplemented occasionally with mobile cranes. A moling hole left in the lower slabs will give access for service modules to be craned in. A hoist to access the mezzanine and basement from ground level feeds the blocklaying and will supply materials for the services which have now started.

Cladding Mock Up:- The glass window and louvre have been installed onto the existing mock up which houses the reconstituted stone.

Future works for July

Steel Beams & Columns:- Steelwork has been erected in most of the Entrance and has recently (10.07.12.) connected the upper columns to the splice columns.

Blockwork:- The ground floor power and gas rooms are built in blockwork, which will be followed by a continuation of perimeter walls in the basement and mezzanine.

Ground Floor:- The remaining central slabs were poured on the 4th and 6th of July 2012. The slab over the large lecture theatre are expected to be poured on 13/7/2012.

1st Floor:- The last slab to the south, 23A, was poured on 6/7/2012. The remaining central slabs are expected to be poured in the next week. These slabs consist of a set of precast concrete planks (temporary supported) with an insitu concrete topping with strands (steels within tubes) which are stressed (tightened at the ends) after the concrete has set hard.

2nd Floor:- The second pour on the south was poured on 20/6/2012 and the remainder is expected to be complete by end July.

3rd Floor:- The first pour on the north, and first roof pour was concreted on 26/6/2012. The first pour on the south is expected to be poured on the 12/7/2012 and all 3rd floor slabs complete by mid August.

Lifts:- The lift contractor Thyssen commenced on 9/7/2012 with the car lift in the north being the first installation.

Mechanical & Electrical:- Crownhouse commenced on the 9/7/2012 with internal drainage.

Waterproofing & Flat Roof:- Rock are expected to start waterproofing work to the ground floor on 16/7/2012.

General

Position:- The project is on average on programme however the critical activities running through the south atrium and entrance works are adrift by a couple of weeks.

Cladding Mock Up:- The glass window and louvre is presently being installed onto the existing mock up which houses the reconstituted stone.

Visits:- The St Aloysius School came to site for a fun day on the 21/6/2012. The Maths Department visited the site on 22/6/2012 to view the latest progress. PDCM group viewed the project on 25/6/2012.

Future works for July

Steel Beams & Columns:- Steelwork has been erected in most of the Entrance and is expected to return to install entrance splice columns in early July.

Blockwork:- The ground floor power and gas rooms are presently being built in blockwork, which will be followed by a continuation of perimeter walls in the basement and mezzanine.

Ground Floor:- Large pre-stressed concrete beams that form part of the ground floor slab that span the large lecture theatre have been installed and the connecting ring beam poured. The central area is gradually being progressed and is expected to be complete by mid July.

1st Floor:- The last slab to the south is 23A expected to be poured by 9/7/2012. These slabs consist of a set of precast concrete planks (temporary supported) with an insitu concrete topping with strands (steels within tubes) which are stressed (tightened at the ends) after the concrete has set hard.

2nd Floor:- The second pour on the south was poured on 20/6/2012 and the remainder is expected to be complete by end July.

3rd Floor:- The first pour on the north, and first roof pour was concreted on 26/6/12.

Lifts:- The lift contractor Thyssen is expected to commence on 9/7/2012 with the car lift in the north being the first installation.

Mechanical & Electrical:- Crownhouse is expected to commence on the 9/7/2012 with internal drainage.

General

Position:- The project is on average 1 week ahead of programme with the critical activities running through the south atrium and entrance works.

Cranes & Hoist:- The structure is largely fed by the tower cranes. These are supplemented occasionally with mobile cranes on days not affected by high winds. A hoist to access the mezzanine and basement from ground level feeds the blocklaying and will supply materials for the services starting shortly.

Temporary Yellow Props: The large cylindrical yellow props have been removed now the mezzanine slab has gained the required strength. The holes formed around where the props used to be will now be made good.

Visits:- The Considerate Contractors Scheme representative visited the site again on 12/6/2012.

Future works for June

Steel Beams & Columns:- Steelwork has been erected in most of the Entrance and continues to be delivered and erected as required.

Blockwork:- The block walls that form a straight face in front of the structural secant piles in the basement are over 50% complete. The Mezzanine has also commenced with blockwork to the perimeter.The internal blockwalls that form individual plantrooms are being progressed at the same time fed by the hoist.

Ground Floor:- The north and south are now complete with the focus progressing towards the central area and the entire floor is expected to be complete towards the end of June. Large prestressed concrete beams form part of the ground floor slab that will span the large lecture theatre.

1st Floor:- The last slab to the south is 23A expected to be poured in the next week. These slabs consist of a set of precast concrete planks (temporary supported) with an insitu concrete topping with strands (steels within tubes) which are stressed (tightened at the ends) after the concrete has set hard.

2nd Floor:- The second floor on the north is complete. The first pour on the south was poured on 31/5/2012. The second floor on the south is expected to be complete by mid July.

3rd Floor:- The columns and walls (2nd to 3rd floor) have begun on the north.

General

Position:- The project remains 1 week ahead of programme with the more critical activities running through the south.

Cranes & Hoist:- The structure continues to be fed by the cranes but have been affected by the spring wind on certain days.

Temporary Yellow Props: The large cylindrical yellow props have gradually become redundant as the completed slabs at mezzanine and ground will form the permanent strut. Once the prop is removed the concrete protrusion is then cut off using a diamond cutting cable saw.

Visits:- The Maths Department visited the site on 25/5/2012 to view the latest progress.

Future works for June

Steel Beams & Columns:- Steelwork has been erected in most of the Entrance and continues to be delivered and erected as required.

Blockwork:- The block walls that form a straight face in front of the structural secant piles in the basement are 40% complete. The internal blockwalls that form individual plantrooms are being progressed at the same time. The hoist is used to serve the blocklayers with materials.

Mezzanine Floor:- The last remaining mezzanine level slab in the central area was poured on 16/5/2012. As the slabs are completed and gain strength the temporary large yellow props spanning across the site will progressively be removed.

Ground Floor:- The critical sections on the south are progressing towards the central area and the entire floor is expected to be complete towards the end of June. Large prestressed concrete beams form part of the ground floor slab that will span the large lecture theatre.

1st Floor:- The south 1st floor 2nd pour was completed on 24/5/2012. These slabs consist of a set of precast concrete planks (temporary supported) with an insitu concrete topping with strands (steels within tubes) which are stressed (tightened at the ends) after the concrete has set hard.

2nd Floor:- The second floor has commenced on the north and is expected to be complete by 1/6/2012. The first pour on the south was poured on 31/5/2012 and it is expected to be complete by mid July.

3rd Floor:- The columns and walls (2nd to 3rd floor) have begun on the north.

Position:- The project remains 1 week ahead of programme with the more critical activities running through the south.

Cranes & Hoist:- The cranes continue to feed the structure works but have occasionally been winded off due to some recent inclement weather. A hoist to access the mezzanine and basement from ground level was installed in position on 19/4/2012.

Visits:- The university's Buildings and Estates Subcommittee (BESC) visited the site on 16/5/2012.

Future works for May

Steel Beams & Columns:- Steelwork is being delivered and erected as required.

Blockwork:- The block walls that form a straight face in front of the structural secant piles in the basement are 15% complete. The internal block walls that form individual plant rooms are being progressed at the same time. The hoist is used to serve the blocklayers with materials.

Mezzanine Floor:- The last remaining mezzanine level slab in the central area is expected to be poured by w.c. 21/5/2012. As the slabs are completed and gain strength the temporary large yellow props spanning across the site will progressively be removed.

Ground Floor:- The critical sections on the south are progressing towards the central area and the entire floor is expected to be complete towards the end of June. Large prestressed concrete beams form part of the ground floor slab that will span the large lecture theatre.

1st Floor:- The north 1st floor was completed on 9/5/12. These slabs consist of a set of precast concrete planks (temporary supported) with an insitu concrete topping with strands (steels within tubes) which are stressed (tightened at the ends) after the concrete has set hard.

2nd Floor:- The second floor has commenced on the north and the vertical columns 1st to 2nd on the south have begun.

Curtain Walling Mock Up:- The mock up with the reconstituted stone and corner connections has been erected and inspected.

Visits:- The Maths Department visited the site on 27/4/2012 to view the latest progress.

Future works for April

Drainage & Basement Slab:- The last remaining central basement slab (6B) was poured on Monday 23/4/2012.

Steel Beams & Columns:- Steelwork is being delivered and erected as required.

Blockwork:- The block walls that form a straight face in front of the structural secant piles commenced on 30/4/2012 in the basement. The hoist is used to serve the blocklayers with materials.

Mezzanine Floor:- The central area mezzanine level slabs have been half completed with the remaining to be completed by mid May. As the slabs are completed and gain strength the temporary large yellow props spanning across the site will progressively be removed.

Ground Floor:- The next critical section on the south is targeted to be poured on 8/5/2012. The various level changes and upstand beams required to edges means that the ground floor slabs will be poured in smaller sections.

1st Floor:- The initial slab on the south to the 1st floor was poured on 3/5/2012. These slabs consist of a set of precast concrete planks (temporarily supported) with an insitu concrete topping with strands (steels within tubes) which are stressed (tightened at the ends) after the concrete has set hard.

Position:- The project remains 1 week ahead of programme with the more critical activities running through the south.

Hoist:- A hoist from ground level to mezzanine and basement levels was installed in position on 19/4/2012.

Curtain Walling Mock Up:- The curtain walling mock up comprising of stone fins and corner connection at corners is complete and is situated close to the site office.

Temporary Yellow Props: The large cylindrical yellow props will gradually become redundant as the completed slabs at mezzanine and ground will form the permanent strut.

Future works for April

Drainage & Basement Slab:- The last remaining central basement slab (6B) is targeted to be poured on Monday 23/4/2012.

Steel Beams & Columns:- The first steelwork within the entrance atria has been erected. As areas progress the remaining steels will be called in as required. Holding down bolts are fixed accurately to the formwork / reinforcement in order that steel I beams and columns can be bolted to the structure after the slab is poured.

Plant Room & Services:- The majority of service trenches to the centre have now been poured (remainder to pour on Monday 23/4/2012). Removable cover slabs will be added once the services are installed.

Mezzanine Floor:- The north the south mezzanine level slabs were completed on the 16/4/2012. The central area mezzanine level slabs are targeted to be complete by mid May.

Ground Floor:- The ground floor slabs will be poured in smaller sections as the levels change and upstand beams are required to edges. As the slabs are completed and gain strength the temporary large yellow props spanning across the site will progressively be removed.

1st Floor:- The initial slab to the 1st floor was poured on 18/4/2012. These slabs consist of a set of precast concrete planks (temporary supported) with an insitu concrete topping with strands (steels within tubes) which are stressed (tightened at the ends) after the concrete has set hard.

Curtain Walling Mock Up:- The curtain walling mock up is in progress and is expected to be complete by Easter.

Visits:- The Maths Department visited the site on 30/3/2012 to view the latest progress.

Future works for April

Drainage & Basement Slab:- The central basement slab (5B) was poured on 30/3/2012. The remaining two pours in the basement will now follow including the last core 3 area. It is targeted to have all the central basement complete by mid April.

Steel Beams & Columns:- The steelwork over the lower plant room was installed on 26/3/2012. The double height steel columns that support steel beams over the small lecture theatre have also been installed. Holding down bolts are fixed accurately to the formwork / reinforcement in order that steel I beams and columns can be bolted to the structure after the slab is poured.

Plant Room & Services:- The service trenches to the centre have commenced now that the bulk dig removal has finished.

Mezzanine Floor:- The mezzanine level pour 9 was poured on 5/4/2012 in the south with following pours progressively moving towards the NW corner.

Ground Floor:- The second main ground floor slab (16B) has been poured in the north on 4/4/2012. As the slabs are completed and gain strength the temporary large yellow props spanning across the site will progressively be removed. To the south the first main slab (13D) was poured on 3/4/2012.

1st Floor:- The initial slab to the 1st floor is expected to be poured after Easter in w.c. 13/4/2012. These slabs consist of a set of precast concrete planks (temporary supported) with an insitu concrete topping with strands (steels within tubes) which are stressed (tightened at the ends) after the concrete has set hard.
