Postgraduate Studentship in Algebraic Geometry and Representation Theory

Vacancy Reference:

Salary Range:
STUDENTSHIP: EPSRC STANDARD STUDENTSHIP + College and University fees

Applications are invited for a 3½ year postgraduate studentship, to work on projects in Algebraic Geometry and/or Representation Theory, with one of Professor Dominic Joyce, Professor Tom Bridgeland, Dr Kevin McGerty, Dr Kobi Kremnizer, or Dr Balázs Szendröi. The studentship is available for a 1st October 2013 start.

The studentship is funded as part of an EPSRC Programme Grant on ‘Motivic invariants and categorification’. This establishes a cross-disciplinary research group working in Geometry and Representation Theory, which the students will be members of.  The areas covered by the project include:

  • Donaldson-Thomas theory of Calabi-Yau 3-folds and its generalizations;
  • connections between Donaldson-Thomas theory and representations of algebras;
  • higher representation theory; and
  • mathematical definitions of Conformal Field Theories.

The student will work on a project in one of the areas of the grant, under the supervision of one of the five investigators.

The studentship is attached to Christ Church college.

The studentship include a basic stipend to cover living expenses, and tuition and college fees at the Home/EU level. Overseas students (non EU) may also apply for the studentships, but some way would have to be found to make up the difference between Home/EU fees and Overseas fees.

Applications may be made online at www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses and should include a CV, covering letter, three references, and a transcript of your undergraduate degree. If you are unable to apply online, you can request a paper form from https://uni-of-oxford.custhelp.com/app/ask/. Applications must arrive by the end of the day on 19 April 2013. Please quote the correct reference BK/12/017 in your covering letter.

Applicants must arrange for their references to be sent either through the online system or directly to Sandy Patel (email graduate [dot] studies [-at-] maths [dot] ox [dot] ac [dot] uk) by the closing date. For further details of the projects, including the application process, please see www.maths.ox.ac.uk/notices/vacancies, or contact graduate [dot] studies [-at-] maths [dot] ox [dot] ac [dot] uk
