Applications are invited for a 3.5-year postgraduate DPhil (PhD) studentship to work on problems in Algorithms and Mathematics Related to Chebfun under the supervision of Professor Nick Trefethen FRS.  The studentship will start on 1 October 2013 and will be based in the Oxford Numerical Analysis Group, and is funded by a European Advanced Investigator Grant awarded to Professor Trefethen.  The studentship covers full stipend together with full university and college fees, plus additional funds for travel and books, and it comes with a place in Exeter College, founded in 1314.  The successful candidate will join a lively Chebfun team of students and postdocs working on theory, algorithms, and open-source software for a powerful new kind of numerical computing with functions instead of numbers (www.maths.ox.ac.uk/chebfun).

The precise area of research will depend on the successful candidate's expertise and interests, which must include a background in numerical analysis. Possibilities include:

  • Algorithms for Chebfun-like computations in multiple dimensions
  • Development of a theory of error analysis and stability for computing with functions
  • Adaptive spectral discretizations for problems with singularities
  • Krylov iterations for operators as opposed to matrices

Oxford's Numerical Analysis Group has been a leading research centre in numerical analysis/scientific computing since the 1960s and consists of about 9 faculty, 6 postdocs, and 15 Dphil students (www.maths.ox.ac.uk/groups/numerical-analysis).

Applications should be made online at www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses and should include a CV, cover letter, three references and a transcript of your undergraduate degree.  If you are unable to apply online, you can request a paper form from uni-of-oxford.custhelp.com/app/ask.

Applications must arrive by noon on Monday 20 May 2013Please quote the correct reference BK/13/04 in the cover letter.
