The Probability group at the University of Sheffield welcomes applications for at least one funded PhD position in probability to begin Autumn 2023.

Students are encouraged to contact any member of the probability group (Nic Freeman, Jonathan Jordan, and Robin Stephenson) to discuss potential research topics and projects before making an application. You will find information on the research interests of the group at https://sites.google.com/sheffield.ac.uk/probabilitygroup/research.

We are a friendly and supportive group that are strongly encouraging applications from people with backgrounds which are typically under-represented in the mathematical sciences. Sheffield’s School of Mathematics and Statistics is committed to, and has a strong history of supporting people from minority backgrounds. The school hosts a large number of ED&I activities throughout the year which PhD students are encouraged to get involved in.

Research students in the School have the option and are encouraged to engage in a small amount of undergraduate teaching. Any teaching activities which PhD students agree to are paid in addition to their stipend on a monthly basis at a generous rate.

Please see the following link for more information on how to apply: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/maths/phd. Please note that due to internal funding deadlines, applications received before mid January are likely to be considered at earlier funding rounds.

Prior to beginning a PhD, the successful candidate is expected to hold a good master’s degree or equivalent in mathematics or a related field, including probability components. For any information on the activities of the group or to assess your eligibility, please contact the member of staff who you are considering working with.
