Our Maths Pet of the Week is our student Ella's dog Rio!
"Rio is my 7 1/2-year-old guide dog. She is 3/4 black Labrador and 1/4 golden retriever, she is predominantly black in colour, but has flex/patches of golden fur on her legs and belly and under her chin, this is called Brindle.
I got Rio in June 2018, so I've had her for about 4 1/2 years now, and she has certainly enabled me to live a much fuller and more independent life than I would have done otherwise. I truly believe that I would not be at Oxford without Rio.
Rio attended more of our first year lectures than some of my friends did, although I can't say she took much from them as she does tend to fall asleep during lectures and classes! Anyone currently in third or fourth year might have heard some odd growling/snoring noises throughout some of our lectures and classes, I hope they haven't been too disturbing!
Rio's favourite food is carrots, and I can often encourage her to get a move on by telling her there'll be carrots at the end of our journey!
Her favourite song is Rio by Duran Duran, which includes the lyrics "her name is Rio and she dances on the sand" because it does look a bit like Rio has been playing in the sand or muddy puddles, which she loves to do in Christchurch Meadows when she gets a free run a couple of times a week.
Rio is a very friendly Labrador, so she loves food and she loves people, it's quite dangerous to be around cafés as she will always be sniffing and scavenging for crumbs, and if anybody pays her any attention she usually responds eagerly. Anybody is welcome to come and say hello to her, just as long as you make sure you let me know that's what you are doing, she is quite distractable otherwise!"
