Latymer Upper is a selective, coeducational, independent day school in the heart of West London. Of the 1250 pupils at the school, nearly a quarter are here on substantial means-tested bursaries, and the school’s aim is to increase this proportion over the coming years. The Mathematics Department is the biggest in the school and each year we have around 120 girls and boys opting to study the subject at A Level, including around 40 who also choose further maths. Results are excellent, with around three quarters of A Level grades at A* or A. The teaching here is exciting and challenging for all the right reasons: bright pupils who are genuinely interested in the subject and are keen to excel at it. Problem-solving is at the heart of what we do at all stages, and the school is successful in preparing students for the various UKMT maths challenges and Olympiads, and for university entry in maths and related disciplines.
The post would be suitable for graduates who haven’t undertaken a teaching qualification but are excited by mathematics and by the prospect of engaging with some of the brightest and most ambitious students around. The post can be tailored to provide both an introduction to the teaching profession and a rigorous, supported route to full Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) on a teaching salary. A successful candidate would initially be on a reduced timetable and training would be provided in-house, through lesson observations, regular meetings and feedback with an experienced staff mentor, team teaching and other relevant professional development. We will continue to offer a complete programme of training and development in the following years.
