PhD Projects across Research Software Engineering, Computational Modelling and Data Sciences/Machine Learning.

About the Projects
Whether it is fusion energy, digital twins for novel drug discovery, or studying the impact of climate change, progress depends more and more on a sophisticated interplay of classical physics driven computational models, data driven machine learning models, and large-scale research software engineering. Projects are available across Mathematics and Computer Science at University College London (UCL) and Imperial College London (ICL) to do research on the interface of software, data, and computational modelling. Topics include:

  • Algorithms and software for High-Performance computing
  • Research software design
  • Data-Intensive scientific computing
  • Applications of complex machine learning models

Successful applicants will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment, develop cutting edge software and data skills, and interact with stakeholders from academia and industry. Students will be registered at either UCL or Imperial College but interact across with colleagues across both universities.

Desired Knowledge and Skills

  • An undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics or related subject area.
  • Good programming skills and the desire to develop these into  world-class software engineering skills.
  • Willingness to work across multi-disciplinary groups and diverse industrial partners.
  • Good writing and communication skills, though we will offer support to develop those within the PhD.

Studentships will be fully funded for four years for home students (including EU with (pre)settled status) with a limited number of fully funded overseas studentships also available.
