About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join the University of Oxford in the newly created role of Apprentice Finance & Accounting Technician at the Mathematical Institute. The role is being created following a period of dynamism and change in the Finance Team, to enable it to further improve its service to the Department.

This role will provide you with the perfect opportunity to get involved with a variety of finance duties that will help develop your finance knowledge, including processing of transactions (accounts payable and receivable), assisting with month end tasks (running reports and processing journals), and general finance administration. You will join and assist our busy and supportive Finance team, which comprises the Finance Manager, three Finance Officers, a Deputy Finance Officer and two Finance Assistants.

You will also get involved in other finance-related duties working with other teams within the Department, enabling you to further develop your experience and build relationships.

About the apprenticeship

As part of this role, you will undertake an Apprenticeship with Abingdon and Witney College where you will complete a Level 2 Intermediate Accounts or Finance Assistant Apprenticeship. The apprenticeship will be delivered through in-house training, as well as day-release or other distance learning methods as supported by Abingdon and Witney College. On successful completion the apprentice will progress to the Level 3 Advanced Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship.

For this apprenticeship, you will work at the Mathematical Institute in the stunning Andrew Wiles Building in central Oxford. The Department supports some flexible working and staff have been working from home during the pandemic.

As part of your apprenticeship, you will be required to attend Abingdon and Witney College (either the Abingdon or Witney location) where you will need to attend the college one day a week during term time.

In total, it will take three years to complete all elements of the apprenticeship, with support from the Department, University, and College throughout, and you will gain an Association of Accounting Technicians Level 2 Certificate and a Level 3 Diploma accounting qualification. There could be an opportunity for the right candidate to complete a Level 4 AAT qualification later in the Apprenticeship.

Becoming an apprentice at the University of Oxford is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience and training. For more information, please visit: https://www.apprenticeships.ox.ac.uk

About you

You will be passionate about starting your career in finance and excited about the opportunity of becoming an apprentice at the University of Oxford. You may be starting your career, or you may be looking for a career change.

To complete the level 2 and 3 apprenticeship you will need to evidence passes at 9-4 or A*-C in GCSE Maths and English. If you did not achieve these grades, do not let that put you off from applying as you can study Functional Skills as part of the apprenticeship giving you the equivalent qualifications needed. These qualifications are completed over 7 days. To help check that you have the potential to achieve these, Abingdon & Witney College will ask you to complete a short initial assessment during the application process.

There are also government residency requirements for Apprenticeship funding which the Training Provider will be able to advise on.
