We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Industrial Mathematics to work with Professors Chris Breward and Colin Please at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford. This is a full-time position, fixed-term for 12 months, and is funded by industrial funding connected with the Centre for Doctoral Training in Industrially Focused Mathematical Modelling (InFoMM CDT) which ends on 30th September 2023. The successful candidate therefore must be in post by 1st October 2022 to complete the 12-month position, and the department can accommodate a start date as early as 1st July 2022.

The position presents an exciting opportunity to combine industrially-driven research endeavours with independent research. The post holder will be expected to spend at least 50% of their time working on short-term industrial challenges, posed and funded by the company partners of the Mathematical Institute, and will write technical and non-technical reports describing mathematical progress.

For the rest of their working time, the successful candidate will carry out their own research programme at the interface between mathematics and industry, involving at least one of Mathematical Modelling, Scientific Computing, or Data Analytics. They will be expected to undertake original research of the highest academic standard in all aspects of their work, represent the Mathematical Institute in early contact stage with industry, write up their results for publication and manage their own academic and administrative activities.

Applicants will be expected to have, or be close to completing, a PhD in mathematics or a related discipline, alongside a realisable research plan involving some aspect of industrial mathematics which demonstrates a genuine desire to engage with industry. They will have the independence and ability to undertake high-quality research, previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations, and excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication skills.
