The University of Cambridge’s van der Schaar Lab is seeking to add a handful of outstanding machine learning Ph.D. students to its elite research team in autumn 2023.

The lab specialises in the creation of cutting-edge machine learning & AI theory and methods to drive a revolution in healthcare. The research team is arguably the most diverse and visible in its field, developing a wide range of ML approaches including deep learning, causal inference, AutoML, time-series analysis, reinforcement learning, and many more.

About the opportunity:

  • Fully funded. All positions are fully funded for 4 years. Funding covers both home and international fees in addition to living costs/stipend.
  • World-leading research and tuition. The research team of under 20 researchers led by Prof. Mihaela van der Schaar punches well above its weight, with 27 papers published at the four largest AI and machine learning conferences (AISTATS, ICLR, ICML and NeurIPS) in the last year alone.
  • Freedom to think big and explore. The lab is creating new frontiers in machine learning. Despite its primary focus on medicine, its researchers continue to produce ground-breaking work across an enormous range of machine learning sub-fields – from new deep learning theory and algorithms to methods for causal inference, statistical machine learning, time series data, interpretable machine learning, and reinforcement learning—and beyond. This breadth of expertise is a product of exceptional academic diversity: among the lab’s researchers, there are computer scientists, engineers, applied mathematicians, statisticians, econometricians, and physicists.
  • Projects with a purpose; work that can change the world. The lab engages in research projects that are targeted and practical. Its mission is to apply machine learning to real-world problems in healthcare, and its goal is nothing short of a revolution in medicine.
  • Unmatched prospects. Employers know that the van der Schaar Lab only takes the best and brightest. When you graduate, you won’t need to settle: alumni around the world have become leaders in their fields, with some continuing to full professorships and others joining top private-sector teams including DeepMind, Google, and Meta.

The lab views diversity of all kinds as a crucial source of strength and creativity. To that end, applications are sought from candidates with a wide variety of nationalities, academic specializations, and professional backgrounds. This is reflected in the previous year’s intake of 5 Ph.D. students, as well as the composition of the broader research team.
