Will you be within reasonable travelling distance to the Birmingham NEC in late June?  If so, read on.

This year the IMA returns to the Big Bang Fair, which is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young people in the UK. This year it takes place on Wednesday 21 – Friday 23 June 2023 at the Birmingham NEC.  The Fair’s aim is to show young people (aged 11 - 14) how many exciting and rewarding opportunities there are out there for them with the right experience and qualifications.

We are a very small Team at the IMA and are looking for help to run the following activities:

Training is provided with demonstrating the above activities.

The Fair is open 09:00 – 12:00 and 13:00 – 16:00 (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), and there is also a Wednesday evening slot, 16:30 – 19:30, called ‘Big Bang Unlocked’ for families and home educators.  Committing to the whole three days is not necessary; you can do part-time hours (09:00 – 12:00 or 13:00 – 16:00 Wed, Thurs and Fri, or 16:30 – 19:30 on the Wednesday evening), or a select number of full days or half days.

In return for your time, you will receive £10.42 per hour worked in thanks for your time, and we will reimburse travel expenses of up to £12.50 per day.  The individual is responsible for paying any national insurance or tax contributions.

International Students

When employing an international student the employer must undertake right to work checks to ensure that the individual is not disqualified from carrying out the work in question by reason of their immigration status.  Due to limited resources at the IMA, and the ad hoc nature of the work being offered, we are unable to carry out these checks and therefore unable to take on international students.  However, the Big Bang Fair itself does have volunteer opportunities, which you can find out about on the Big Bang Fair website.

Working at the Big Bang Fair is a rewarding experience, in which you can make a difference to young people and show them how their studies could lead to a career in, or using, Mathematics.  You will also be joining a team of enthusiastic people and will develop your team working and communication skills.

Most importantly, you will have fun on the day!

If you would like to join the IMA Outreach Team for the Big Bang Fair, please contact me on my normal work email address: @email by 9am, Monday 5 June 2023 stating what days/time you are available.
