1:15-2:15 Isoperimetric inequalities of Groups and Isoperimetric Profiles of surfaces - Panos Papazoglou

It is an interesting question whether Gromov's `gap theorem' between a sub-quadratic and a linear isoperimetric inequality can be generalized in higher dimensions. There is some evidence (and a conjecture) that this might be the case for CAT(0) groups. In this talk I will explain how the gap theorem relates to past work of Hersch and Young-Yau on Cheeger constants of surfaces and of Lipton-Tarjan on planar graphs. I will present some related problems in curvature-free geometry and will use these ideas to give an example of a surface with discontinuous isoperimetric profile answering a question of Nardulli-Pansu. Ashot Minasyan and I construct (or should that be find?) examples of groups that establish the result in the title. These groups also fail to have Wise's property: they contain a pair of elements no powers of which generate either a free subgroup or a free abelian subgroup. I will discuss these groups.

The history of computing beyond the computer

Abstract

The BSHM meeting on “The history of computing beyond the computer” looks at the people and the science underpinning modern software and programming, from Charles Babbage’s design notation to forgotten female pioneers.

Registration will be £32.50 for standard tickets, £22.00 for BSHM members and Oxford University staff, and £6.50 for students. This will include tea/coffee and biscuits at break times, but not lunch, as we wanted to keep the registration fee to a minimum. A sandwich lunch or a vegetarian sandwich lunch can be ordered separately on the Eventbrite page. If you have other dietary requirements, please use the contact button at the bottom of this page. There is also a café in the Mathematical Institute that sells hot food at lunchtime, alongside sandwiches and snacks, and there are numerous places to eat within easy walking distance.

This will not be a normal workshop with a single scientist presenting an unsolved problem where mathematics may help. Instead it is more of a discussion meeting with a few speakers all interested in a single theme. So far we have:

Lenny Smith (LSE) on Using Empirically Inadequate Models to inform Your Subjective Probabilities: How might Solvency II inform climate change decisions?

Dan Rowlands (AOPP, Oxford) on "objective" climate forecasting;

Tim Palmer (ECMWF and AOPP, Oxford) on Constraining predictions of climate change using methods of data assimilation;

Chris Farmer (Oxford) about the problem of how to ascertain the error in the equations of a model when in the midst of probabilistic forecasting and prediction.
