Contribution to the Department Awards 2025-26

We are pleased to announce that the awards for Contributions to the Department in 2025-26 are made to the following graduate students.

Mario Marcos Losada: for his contributions in organising the Junior Algebra and Representation Theory Seminar, running Prelims Corner and supporting outreach activities. He has also been a dedicated mentor to first-year undergraduates and newer DPhil students with an exemplary approach to delivering quality teaching.

Harry Stuart: for his contributions to departmental life through organising and delivering the Mathematical Institute Quiz, creating a highly original and engaging evening that brought together graduate students, ECRs, faculty, and professional services staff. He dedicated considerable time and creativity to making this exceptionally well-attended event a memorable and successful part of the department’s social life.

Vlad Tuchilus: for his contributions to departmental community life through taking the initiative to revive Tea@11, the Mathematical Institute’s morning coffee break. He secured funding, coordinated student volunteers, and managed the practical arrangements, successfully restoring a valued opportunity for members across the department to meet and connect.

Georgina Ryan: for her contributions running Mathematrix, securing its future through a challenging period while delivering a vibrant programme of academic, social, and diversity-focused activities. She has also made a substantial contribution to equality, diversity, and inclusion across the department, notably through co-leading the Oxford Women and Non-Binary People in Mathematics Day which was attended by 145 people from 24 different institutions.

Events in the Department

Mathematrix - full term ahead

Mathematrix is a student-led group in the Mathematical Institute where postgraduates and postdocs discuss and explore topics related to challenges in academic life and being a minority in the maths community. Below are details of the Welcome Lunch and the term card for the Michaelmas term.

Noether

Those of you who were here last academeic year may remember us hosting Noether, a play about the mathematician Emmy Noether from Oxford student theatre company Cartesian Productions. Such was it success, it has been touring universities across the country and returns to the Andrew Wiles Building for its final show on 17th October.

Teaching and Learning

Short stories 1 - Ramón

Ramón has just left us for a postdoctoral position in Cambridge (it happens occasionally), but before he departed he discussed his research into using random walks to understand physical systems.

Short stories 2 - Rosie and Nick

Rosie and Nick are just about to start their third year. Before they finished their second year, we had a chat about stuff: maths stuff and Oxford stuff.

News From the Wider Mathematical Community

The Emmy Noether & Grace Chisholm Young Fellowships

The London Mathematical Society (LMS) Emmy Noether Fellowships and Grace Chisholm Young Fellowship are now open for applications. The Emmy Noether Fellowships offer grants of between £2,000 and £10,000 per applicant to enhance the mathematical sciences research of holders either re-establishing their research programme after returning from a major break associated with caring responsibilities or requiring support to maintain their research programme while dealing with significant ongoing caring responsibilities.

The Grace Chisholm Young Fellowship will give an endorsement of the holder's status as a mathematician, so that a break in formal employment should not prevent them from resuming a career as a mathematician at a later stage.
