Your first month... and beyond

Your line manager works with us to draw up an induction plan of events and meetings for you. In your initial meeting with your line manager you can expect to discuss:

  • Your role, responsibilities, and how the position contributes to the broader working of the team and the department;
  • The structure of the department and its people; who the key members of staff in the department are and what they do;
  • Your weekly working hours, and how these will be worked across the week, including any discussions around hybrid working in line with the University’s New Ways of Working.

In your first month, your line manager will introduce you to relevant colleagues in the wider department and will meet with you to discuss:

  • How we can support you in achieving your training and development goals, including useful contacts to approach for further induction and training information, including whom to approach should you identify any further induction/development needs;
  •  The structure of your probationary period, and when you can expect to hear from HR with reminders for reviews.

Probation

In general, all new members of professional services and early career research staff at the Mathematical Institute are assigned a 12-month probationary period, with faculty usually being appointed to a 5-year Initial Period of Office (you will find details outlined in your contract). These probation periods offer a framework through which you can set objectives with your line manager, review your progress, and identify areas for potential training and development.
