Owen Jones

The overriding memory that I have of my undergraduate degree at Warwick is the excitement I would feel as I frequently fixated over maths problems, whether that be while pacing around my bedroom, cooking dinner, or doing my weekly shop. Consequently, I know how fantastic university can be for someone if they are genuinely enthusiastic about studying their course, so I am passionate about delivering the most enjoyable course possible for everyone. Aside from my love of maths, I have the right skillset for this role. From performing on stage as a young child to presenting my research at conferences, I have always been a confident public speaker, so will not be shy to express my views in the best interests of my fellow students. Moreover, my work as a student ambassador at Warwick, where I encouraged prospective students to apply to the university, as well as my role as a telephone interviewer at IFF Research, where I convinced busy companies to complete government surveys, have greatly enhanced my persuasive abilities. This means I have the skills needed to influence decision making so that it is done with the best interests of the students at heart.

Niklas Nertinger

I think I’d be a good fit for this role as I’m approachable and have already built solid connections within the OMMS cohort. I feel confident that my peers would find me easy to approach when sharing their concerns or ideas about the course. I am also dedicated to taking all feedback seriously and ensuring that student perspectives are effectively communicated to the committee.

Abdella Mohammed

I have experience representing students' voices. At my previous university, I served as an undergraduate representative to the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee for my academic division, which consisted of heads of schools from Computing, Engineering, and Mathematical Sciences, alongside the Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor and other representatives from HR and other sectors of the division. The committee met three times per term to raise issues and assess the progress of those raised at previous meetings. This demonstrates my commitment and prior experience in discussing and addressing issues, as well as engaging with staff members of varying seniority in a productive and professional manner.

As an OMMS representative, I will effectively represent the views of OMMS students, building on my previous experiences. This role will also provide me with the opportunity to grow professionally by learning how to present my views and those of my fellow students in formal settings. I will also bring unique insights to the table, drawing on my lived experiences as a refugee, care-leaver, and black individual—groups that have historically been underrepresented in higher education, particularly in mathematics.
