Multiple-contact thermoelastic oscillations

This article derives and analyzes a model for the thermoelastic response of a system of pins sliding relative to a rigid rough plane. The model not only describes the configurations observed in the experiments of Barber but also reveals the possibility of other modes, depending on the relative importance of wear, thermal expansion and thermal conduction.
