Want to find a career that genuinely helps the world?
"The perfect first step for people who want to discover their role in making the world a better place" (Bella, 4th year Biochemistry)
The Arete Fellowship is a beginner-friendly 5-week programme combining serious ethical inquiry with rigorous analytical frameworks. Past fellows come from every background, from philosophy and law to computer science and medicine. Through short readings and small-group interactive discussions, you'll develop skills in critical thinking, evidence evaluation, and structured argument that are directly relevant to high-impact careers.
Every applicant gets a personal 1-1 with Effective Altruism Oxford's director to find the right programme for them, and a follow-up career 1-1 at the end. Past fellows have gone on to roles in AI safety, global health, animal welfare research, and beyond.
We’re particularly excited about Maths students applying, as your skills in quantitative reasoning, modelling, and problem-solving are directly relevant to evaluating complex global challenges, from forecasting risks to assessing the effectiveness of interventions in global health, policy, and emerging technologies. The fellowship provides an opportunity to apply your analytical abilities to high-stakes problems, develop strategic thinking, and contribute to evidence-based discussions on creating real-world impact.
