Invertible phases of matter are closely related to homotopy theory. Kitaev famously proposed that invertible phases in different spatial dimensions organize into a spectrum. Several recent works have sought to establish this proposal rigorously. In this talk, I will introduce the notion of a spectrum and review Kitaev’s argument, then discuss recent progress toward proving his conjecture.
