Oxford Mathematics in Conversation on AI

Modern AI is a remarkable achievement of the mathematical sciences and is now, in turn, having an extraordinary impact on mathematics. Its development is also raising profound questions for mathematics itself: about discovery, understanding, creativity and the experience of research (the very future of research?).

Oxford Mathematics is coming together in conversation about these changes. Through filmed discussions and short interviews, we will  (explain) and explore mathematical results, personal experiences and the choices that will shape our subject’s future.

We will ask:

  • What have we learned? What do AI-led results establish, what makes them significant, and what does it take to understand their proofs?
  • How are mathematicians working differently? Where do researchers find useful tools, encounter limitations, or choose other approaches?
  • What mathematics will help us build better AI? How can mathematical ideas advance the capabilities, reliability and understanding of these systems?
  • What future do we want to create? What should we pursue, teach and support—and what opportunities can we open for the next generation?

These conversations will be constructive, curious and candid. Excitement and possibility belong alongside criticism, uncertainty and the recognition that people experience change differently. Concrete mathematics and honest accounts of research will guide the discussion.

Oxford’s expertise, resources and public platform give us a privileged vantage point. We are proud of that position and recognise the responsibility it brings. We want to listen widely, share what we learn, and be among the leading voices in the wider discussion about the shape of mathematics and AI.

Our ambition is to show why mathematical ideas, judgement and people remain essential—and why investing in them matters.

For anyone curious about mathematics, AI and what comes next: watch on, and bring your questions, experiences and ideas.

We welcome you to the conversation.

Watch films discussing our work on AI and its impact and potential. Many more to come.
