Physicists and mathematicians sometimes talk about how certain properties or features 'emerge' from out of their equations. Indeed, there is even an entire research focus studying 'emergence'. But conceptually what does mean? And does it, or should it, have any links with any other discipline?
If you are free on the 29th June (13:00-17:30) then please do come to a free & open-to-all symposium titled Emergence in the Martin Wood Lecture Theatre (Physics department).
We are inviting applications for the post of Departmental Lecturer in Mathematical and Computational Finance at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, with effect from 1 September 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
As Departmental Lecturer, you will engage in advanced study and academic research in applied mathematics with a focus on mathematical and computational finance, as part of the Mathematical and Computational Finance Research Group led by Professor Rama Cont.
This exciting new post presents an excellent opportunity to join the leadership team of a thriving academic department. The Mathematical Institute is one of the world’s leading mathematics departments and our research, impact, and environment were all ranked first in the UK in the 2021 and 2014 Research Excellence Framework exercises. The department has around 250 staff on the main payroll (including over 100 faculty members).
