Algebraic flow
Abstract
We present an algebraic formulation for the flow of a differential equation driven by a path in a Lie group. The formulation is motivated by formal differential equations considered by Chen.

We will discuss models for vehicular traffic flow on networks. The models include both the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) model and Follow-the-Leader (FtL) models.
The emphasis will be on the Braess paradox in which adding a road to a traffic network can make travel times worse for all drivers.
In addition we will present a novel proof how FtL models approximate the LWR model in case of heavy traffic.
Abstract: We define the Hochschild complex and cohomology of a monoid in an Ab-enriched monoidal category. Then we interpret some of the lower dimensional cohomology groups and discuss when the cohomology ring happens to be graded-commutative.
We prove existence of a global semigroup of conservative solutions of the nonlinear variational wave equation $u_{tt}-c(u) (c(u)u_x)_x=0$. The equation was derived by Saxton as a model for liquid crystals. This equation shares many of the peculiarities of the Hunter–Saxton and the Camassa–Holm equations. In particular, the equation possesses two distinct classes of solutions denoted conservative and dissipative. In order to solve the Cauchy problem uniquely it is necessary to augment the equation properly. In this talk we describe how this is done for conservative solutions. The talk is based on joint work with X. Raynaud.
