Congratulations to Prof Hrushovski who is the joint winner of this year's Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences for his "remarkable contributions to discrete mathematics and model theory with interaction notably with algebraic geometry, topology and computer sciences". He shares the prize with Noga Alon (Princeton).
Next week we are skipping the Fridays@2 talk and heading straight to the snacks. Catch up with course mates or meet some new ones over tea, coffee, biscuits and more.
We'd like to offer a bigger snack next week again (probably pizza again), so register your interest here to avoid missing out and to help us provide enough food. Spaces are limited so sign up early!
As part of Oxfordshire Artweeks, ten local photographers present their work covering multiple genres, from landscape and architecture to documentary and portraiture. The group are very pleased to return to the Mathematical Institute to stage this exhibition, which runs from 10 May through 27 May in the South Mezzanine.
Have you had a lecturer who's gone above and beyond? Or just want to thank a tutor for their help this year? The Departmental Teaching Award Scheme recognises excellent teaching. Awards are available to all those who teach for the department, including graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and DPhil supervisors.
How to nominate
Nominations are now open until 5pm on Friday 13th May via the Maths website:
No longer any need to queue outside I'm Japanese or spend half your student loan at Gail's. Cafe π is back with a full service.
As ever, send us your feedback. Though perhaps be gentle to start with.
And, once things are running smoothly, you will be able to buy our Oxford Mathematics merchandise via the cafe (cash only).
This is an exciting opportunity to celebrate the breadth of initiatives and extraordinary individual commitment to EDI across the University. There are five categories: two for 'Champion or Role Model' and three project categories. Both students and staff can be nominated. More information is available on the Diversity Awards webpage.
A DPhil student in economics is conducting a very short survey on face masks and would be very grateful if you could spare 2 minutes of your time to complete it. The survey is available here: https://forms.gle/yF2GMvHEmvFV68Gd8
Two University members have died recently in cycling accidents (plus a member of the Public), one of them at the Plain roundabout just down from Magdalen College. There is now a petition to improve the roundabout for cyclists. If you would like to learn more and sign please click here.
