Marc Lackenby - Knotty Problems

Knots are a familiar part of everyday life, for example tying your tie or doing up your shoe laces. They play a role in numerous physical and biological phenomena, such as the untangling of DNA when it replicates. However, knot theory is also a well-developed branch of pure mathematics.

In his talk, Marc will give an introduction to this theory and will place it in the context of the modern field of topology. This is the branch of mathematics where you are allowed to stretch and deform objects, but not tear them. He will explain how topological techniques can be used to prove some surprising facts about knots. He will also give some problems about knots that mathematicians haven't yet been able to solve.

Marc Lackenby is a Professor of Mathematics in Oxford and a Fellow of St Catherine's College.

Telling a mathematical story

Abstract

Mathematicians need to talk and writeabout their mathematics.  This includes undergraduates and MSc students, who may be writing a dissertation or project report, preparing a presentation on a summer research project, or preparing for a job interview.  We think that it can be helpful to think of this as a form of story telling, as this can lead to more effective communication.  For a story to be engaging you also need to know your audience.In this session, we'll discuss what we mean by telling a mathematical story, give you some top tips from our experience, and give you a chance to think about how you might put this into practice.  The session will be of relevance to all undergraduates and MSc students, not only those currently writing a dissertation or preparing an oral presentation.

Mathematical biology has grown enormously over the past 40 years and has changed considerably. At first, biology inspired mathematicians to come up with models that could, at an abstract level, "explain" biological phenomena - one of the most famous being Alan Turing's model for biological pattern formation. However, with the enormous recent advances in biotechnology and computation, the field is now truly inter- and multi-disciplinary. We shall discuss the changing role mathematics is playing in applications to biology and medicine.

Mathematics is both the language and the instrument that connects our abstract understanding with the physical world, thus knowledge of mathematics quickly translates to substantial knowledge and influence on the way the world works.  But those who have the greatest ability to understand and manipulate the world hold the greatest capacity to do damage and inflict harm.  In this talk I'll explain that yes, there is ethics in mathematics, and that it is up to us as mathematicians to make good ethical choices in order to prevent our work from becoming harmful.

David Sumpter - Soccermatics: could a Premier League team one day be managed by a mathematician? SOLD OUT

Former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and current Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola is considered by many to be a footballing genius. He has revolutionised the tactical approach to football and that revolution has come about through his careful study of the geometry of the game. But can abstract mathematics really help a team improve its performance?

David Sumpter thinks it can. Unlike the simple statistics applied to (lesser) sports, football is best understood through the patterns the players create together on the field. From the geometry of shooting, through the graph theory of passing, to the tessellations created by players as they find space to move in to, all of these patterns can be captured by mathematical models. As a result, football clubs are increasingly turning to mathematicians. 

David Sumpter is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. His scientific research covers everything from the inner workings of fish schools and ant colonies, the analysis of the passing networks of football teams and segregation in society.
