Mathematical Institute Bulletin

The MPLS Divisional Teaching Award Scheme celebrates success, and recognises innovation and/or leadership in teaching. Awards are available to all those who teach, including graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and learning support staff. The Teaching Award Scheme is administered by the MPLS Divisional Office and awards are made, on merit, across the departments by a cross-departmental panel chaired by the Associate Head of Division (Taught Degrees).

The third annual Oxford Women and Non-Binary People in Mathematics Day (OxWIM Day) ran very successfully on the 28th of February in the Andrew Wiles Building. This year’s theme was ‘Shaping Success’ and explored the many ways underrepresented genders can define their own success within a mathematical career. 

The conference highlighted a broad range of pathways, spanning academia, industry, and roles in between. Organised by a committee of 15 students from the Mirzakhani Society and Mathematrix, the event brought approximately 140 people to Oxford from across the UK, including six attendees from Scotland and Wales. 70% of attendees represented 23 different universities outside Oxford. 

Speakers from Oxford Mathematics were Ulrike Tillmann, Melanie Rupflin and Chris Hollings. We hope to see you there next year.

Herstory - Celebrating International Women's Day 

On Monday 9 March join colleagues across MPLS to celebrate International Women’s Day (Sunday 8 March). This IWD they are spotlighting women’s voices and stories with a day of reflection, practice, and conversation for women in academia and research.  Find out more about the programme.

Oxford University Club Cricket Club (OUCCC) is a friendly and inclusive cricket club for Oxford University staff, graduate students, and alumni, and we’d love to welcome new players this season. We play relaxed 40-over fixtures almost every Sunday from April to September, take a break in July for our popular mini T20 World Cup, and run weekly outdoor nets from February onwards (weather permitting). Players of all abilities are very welcome.

We also run the Jack Cox Cup, an inter-departmental T20 competition. The competition began in 1977, with Zoology winning the inaugural cup. After a hiatus, it returned last year for the first time since 2019, with Physics emerging victorious against strong competition from Pharmacology, IT Services, and Medicine.

The DPhil speaking event ‘Talk about your thesis’ will take place on the 20 March from 12 to 2 pm at the Radcliffe Science Library. 

The event will feature seven talks from DPhil students about their project, followed by a free pizza lunch.

Hungarian composer György Kurtág was 100 years old last month. But he isn't taking it easy having just had his second opera premiered.

Kurtág started Játékok (Games) in 1973 with the idea of capturing the spirit of a child's play. He has been playing ever since - there are ten volumes.
