Mathematical Institute Bulletin

The Department is upgrading its authentication systems to enhance security and prepare for future multi-factor authentication. All users must reset their departmental password and complete onboarding via a secure link to be emailed on Wednesday, 18 March (Week 9).

The process must be completed within one week, or access to departmental systems will be temporarily blocked from 25 March (Week 10) until onboarding is finished. The new password will apply to all internal Maths systems, but will not affect central University SSO credentials or email.

1 April 2026 marks the 250th birthday of Sophie Germain, who is remembered for major contributions to mathematics, ranging from advances in number theory related to Fermat’s Last Theorem to foundational results in elasticity theory. She was also the first woman to win a major competitive research prize in mathematics. We will celebrate her life and work through four talks for a general audience, given by Lukas Brantner, Ana Caraiani, James Maynard (the Oxford Mathematics Public Lecture), and Laura Monk, alongside a demonstration and a panel discussion.

This joint one-week PDE event comprises the Workshop on Stability Analysis for Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations across Multiscale Applications (on Monday–Thursday) and the 15th Oxbridge PDE Conference (on Thursday–Friday).

The conference will take place at Pembroke College.

Black Box Recorder made three albums in the late 1990s and early 2000s and then went off 'do other things'. Then social media got interested when Billie Eilish posted videos of herself listening to their first song, 'Child Psychology'. So Black Box have decided to reform. Smart move.

This song captures their deadbeat feel. Their collection of 'B' sides was called 'the Worst of Black Box Recorder'. You get the picture.
