Charles Coulson Scholarship
Thanks to a generous gift from a philanthropic donor, the Mathematical Institute is delighted to offer the Coulson Scholarship for a student ordinarily resident in the UK (eligible for home fees), to complete a DPhil in Mathematical Physics beginning in 2025/26.
This scholarship commemorates the life and work of British mathematician Charles Alfred Coulson FRS (1910-1974). Charles was a brilliant lecturer and communicator, who will be remembered as the outstanding quantum mathematician and chemist of his generation. He took up the Mathematical Institute’s Rouse Ball Chair in 1952, the year in which the institute was created, and was chair of the charitable organisation Oxfam from 1965 to 1971.
Terms and conditions
The scholarship covers all tuition fees for the fee liability period of the course and provides a 3.5-year grant for living expenses at UKRI rates.
How to apply
To be considered for the studentship, all you have to do is submit your completed application by the January deadline for the DPhil in Mathematics course. All successful applicants who are ordinarily resident in the UK (eligible for home fees) and working in the field of Mathematical Physics will be automatically considered for funding.
