Scholarships for Postgraduate Study

The Mathematical Institute has several scholarships available for postgraduate study. For most scholarships, all applicants submitting their application by the relevant deadline and meeting any additional criteria will be considered.

The University also offers many other scholarships which are assessed throughout the admissions period, and can be awarded any time between March - June. For more information, please see the University's Graduate Funding page. To be considered for these you must be made an offer of a place first, so an offer of funding may follow the offer of a place by weeks or months.

Scholarships for DPhil/CDT studies

Available scholarships within the Mathematical Institute for DPhil studies varies year to year. These may include

  • grant-funded scholarships (linked to particular supervisors)
  • research council scholarships
  • donor-funded scholarships and
  • scholarships funded by Mathematical Institute.

As such, the list below is only indicative. All offer-holders will be considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible.

Scholarships for MSc studies

Scholarships for MSc studies are available through the Department as well as the University's wider scholarships programme.

Four partial scholarships for students on the MSc in Mathematical and Computational Finance in 2025-26. These scholarships in particular aim to improve access to graduate study for those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Women in Geometry and Number Theory scheme is a deferred studentship, available to women who are considering the MSc in Mathematical Sciences in Oxford and a PhD in Geometry and Number Theory.

Scholarship FAQs

How many funded places are available for each course?

This is not an easy question to answer, as there are so many different scholarships available through the University. As all offer-holders may be considered for all scholarships they are eligible for, the number each year may vary.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

For most scholarships, all applicants are considered as part of the assessment process. There are some exceptions, notable the Martingale Foundation scholarships, which require an application directly to them, as well as some other University scholarships. Please check the University's funding page for more details.

How much is a scholarship worth?

This varies by scholarship, but often a scholarship will cover all fees and a set amount towards living costs. Details are sent as part of a funding offer to successful applicants.

Who should I contact about scholarships?
