Will you be within reasonable travelling distance to the Birmingham NEC in late June? If so, read on.
This year the IMA returns to the Big Bang Fair, which is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young people in the UK. This year it takes place on Tuesday 17-Thursday 19 June 2025 at the Birmingham NEC. The Fair’s aim is to show young people (aged 11-14) how many exciting and rewarding opportunities there are out there for them with the right experience and qualifications.
We are a very small team at the IMA and are looking for help to run the following activities:
- The legendary MathsCareers activity Can you beat the Cube?
- Galton Board
- Soap Bubbles
- Aerofoil
- Bernoulli Blower
(Training is provided on demonstrating the above activities.)
The Fair is open 09:00-12:00 and 13:00-16:00 (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). Committing to the whole three days is not necessary; you can do part-time hours (09:00-12:00 or 13:00-16:00 Tues, Wed and Thurs), or a select number of full days or half days.
In return for your time, you will receive £12.21 per hour worked in thanks for your time, and we will reimburse travel expenses of up to £12.50 per day. (The individual is responsible for paying any national insurance or tax contributions.)
International Students:
Due to UK immigration regulations, employers must carry out specific right to work checks when hiring international students, to ensure the work complies with the restrictions of their visa. Unfortunately, due to limited resources and the ad hoc nature of the work offered by the IMA, we are unable to conduct these checks. As a result, we are not able to offer roles to individuals on student visas.
However, the Big Bang Fair itself does have volunteer opportunities, which you can find out about on the Big Bang Fair website.
What you can expect
Working at the Big Bang Fair is a rewarding experience, in which you can make a difference to young people and show them how their studies could lead to a career in, or using, Mathematics. You will also be joining a team of enthusiastic people and will develop your team working and communication skills. Most importantly, you will have on the fun day!
